Who is behind Retro Rehab?

My name is Chris Sonier, and Retro Rehab is my passion project. It all started long ago when I would take apart devices as a kid to see what was inside, and of course, at the time, I wasn’t able to put them back together! As I grew, I eventually got my first breadboard and some electronic components so I can start to experiment and truly start to understand circuits. I started truly working with electronics in 2012 when I delved deeply into the realm of building custom computers. From there, I became obsessed with building, learning circuits and feeling a thrill every time I would learn another facet of how electronics work. The first true repair I did was in 2018 when my Nintendo GameBoy Advanced would no longer power on, and I thought to myself:

Through the years, as digital media started to become a dominating force, I’ve taken a heavy interest in physical media. This shifted my view further back in our timeline when things were a touch more… tangible. This sparked my passionate interest in older electronics and their brilliant designs. I love designs that were meant to really last, especially now that we’re surrounded by so much disposable technology that it truly breaks my heart.

I CAN FIX THAT!

Passion & Restoration

So many brilliant minds designed outstanding devices through the ages, I’m particularly drawn to the 1900s, where it started off with an absolutely world-changing invention by John Ambrose Fleming: The vacuum tube diode. The history of electronics and computing fascinates me to no end, and I’m always looking to learn more. Restoration feels like a way of honouring this history, and I feel obligated to do my part and contribute to the preservation of these designs and to help people keep experiencing what many would consider obsolete.
